Cylinder Measurement

Easson2D supports collecting points at multiple height positions on a cylindrical surface with the probe and generating a cylinder element from the collected spatial measurement points.

Cylinder measurement differs from horizontal circle measurement. Horizontal circle mainly measures the circular cross-section at a single height, while cylinder measurement requires probing the cylindrical surface at multiple different heights to determine the spatial position and direction of the entire cylinder.

1. Select Cylinder Measurement

Click:

Probe Measurement → Cylinder Measurement

to enter the cylinder measurement mode.

Once in this mode, you can move the probe to the measured cylindrical surface to capture points.

2. Capture a Set of Points at the First Height

First, select a height position on the cylinder.

At this height, capture points evenly around the circumference. Each set requires at least:

3 measurement points

It is recommended to spread the 3 points as far apart as possible around the cylinder rather than concentrating them on the same side.

For example, capture points in different directions around the cylinder so that this set of measurement points can reliably determine the circular cross-section at that height.

3. Continue Capturing Points at Other Heights

After the first set is complete, move the probe to another height position on the cylinder.

At the new height, capture another set of points around the circumference:

at least 3 measurement points per set

If the cylinder is tall, you can continue adding measurement sets at more height positions.

For example:

Level 1: 3 pointsLevel 2: 3 pointsLevel 3: 3 points

Keep a reasonable distance between different heights so that the collected data can represent the actual shape of the cylinder along its height.

4. Complete the Measurement and Generate a Cylinder

After capturing all the required probe points, right-click in the:

image area or geometry area

to end the current point capture operation.

Easson2D calculates the cylinder from the measurement points collected at different heights and generates the corresponding cylinder element.

Basic Workflow

Cylinder measurement can be summarized as:

Probe Measurement → Cylinder Measurement → Capture at least 3 points around the circumference at the first height → Capture at least 3 more points at another height → Add more measurement sets at other heights as needed → Right-click in the image area or geometry area → A cylinder element is automatically generated

Point Distribution

Cylinder measurement requires considering point distribution in two directions:

Around the Circumference

Measurement points at the same height should be spread around the cylinder as much as possible.

Avoid concentrating points only within a small arc of the cylinder.

Along the Height

Points must be captured at different height positions.

If all measurement points are at the same height, the collected data mainly reflects a single circular cross-section and cannot fully determine the spatial direction of the entire cylinder.

Therefore, keep a reasonable height spacing between different measurement sets.

Measurement Recommendations

For more stable cylinder measurement results, it is recommended to:

  • Capture at least 3 valid measurement points at each height
  • Spread the measurement points at the same height evenly around the cylinder
  • Capture points at at least two different heights
  • Increase the number of measurement heights and points for longer cylinders
  • Avoid burrs, notches, chamfers, and obviously abnormal surface positions
  • Make sure all measurement points come from the same measured cylindrical surface

Reasonable circumferential distribution and height span help Easson2D establish the spatial position and direction of the cylinder more stably.
